HOW TO PRACTICE THE MAUI HABIT
Meta description: The Maui Habit is a 3-second habit that has helped my family and team. Here’s how you can practice it.
I've started following the Maui Habit from the book - Tiny Habits by Dr BJ Fogg.
In his book, Dr BJ Fogg talks about the value of building small habits which can be scaled up. He talks about one particular practice that he claimed had a significant impact on him, hence his favourite habit. He calls this habit the Maui Habit.
But what is the Maui Habit? Every morning, as soon as you wake up, repeat the phrase, “Today is going to be a great day.”
This might seem like a silly idea but trust me, it works. This simple habit is to start and easy to practise. It has improved my energy and brought about a positive change in my life.
Even when you're feeling “crummy”, tired, achy, or depressed, this small act can give you a better chance of a great day. Remember, it's your attitude that sets your altitude!
WHAT MAKES THE MAUI HABIT SO SUCCESSFUL?
Dr Foggs states that emotions create a habit. And because this small habit does not take much to do, it makes it an easy behaviour to follow. This way, you start looking for positive things that have happened in your day and appreciating them even more.
HOW TO PRACTICE THE MAUI HABIT.
Ever since I read the Tiny Habits book, I have been practising this habit daily. The way I do it is simple. When I wake up and my feet land on the floor, I say, “Today is going to be a great day.” And it takes about three seconds.
You can start by saying this phrase when you wake up. It is a great way to start the day. Of course, there will be days when you forget to say it. It’s okay; just repeat these words whenever you remember.
It may take some time, but it will develop into a habit you will automatically follow daily. You can also alter this phrase to suit the time of day.
For example - You can say, “It has been a great day so far” during the afternoon and “It was a wonderful day” at the end of the day.
This way, you’ll learn to appreciate each day and be more accepting in the face of adversity. Start following this easy habit, and you’ll be surprised by the effect this will have on your behaviour and your outlook on life.
Think of the Maui Habit as a simple practice that you do each morning that takes about three seconds. This will show you how easy it is to start and help you take a positive outlook on your life.
